ID Research Assistant and Master of Environmental Design thesis student Nicolas Hamel @nico_tect explores the relationships between humans and machines with his Studio 6 project. Hamel writes: "The age of the digital craftsman is one that fully accepts and manages the interface between the human and the machine. It is through this management that a new type of craft will be developed that is formed from the expression of designed “affect” (Farshid Moussavi, 2006, p. 8). The barriers that have prevented this emergence are being removed as we shift from the design of an industrial part to the contingent industrial process." Flip through to view the full project.

his project titled "Sputnik" was part of an installation at Beakerhead @beakerhead 2015 called The Ministers. "Sputnik" is an investigation of thin shell structures produced by conic geometries. This project was designed in collaboration with Mariana Ibanez and Simon Kim of IK Studio. The design team focused on iteratively prototyping this project across materials and techniques. The final object was produced in thin shell aluminum from flat sheet material.

NEST, designed and built by our Research Assistant Davin Cheng @sosadav_ for Studio 2, investigates the nature of the joint. The side table can be taken apart into two individual tables that vary in height, coming back into its completed form once the two tables are nested back into each other.

"Nancy" was a project completed as part of an installation at Beakerhead @beakerhead 2015 called The Ministers. "Nancy" is an investigation of a self-supporting thin shell structure lit from within. The piece anchored the Beakernight event as an object to draw visitors into the space from the main street. This project was designed in collaboration with Mariana Ibanez and Simon Kim of IK Studio. The design focused on using various types of flat stock plastics to explore the limits of double curvature. Even though she's old now, we think she's beautiful.
